Elmo is one of Sesame Street's most popular characters. Introduced into the long-running children's programme in the early 1980s, the familiar red monster, with his infectious giggle and sing-song high voice, has had his own programmes, movies, books and best-selling toy.

Giggling Elmo's Hot Tomato Game doesn't include the furry monster, but a closely related “Hot Tomato” that shakes and giggles for a random amount of time when you press his nose.

The red chuckler comes complete with a set of picture cards, covering everything from colours to foods to animals. Whoever's holding the tomato needs to name an item on the card - or make a simple association - and then pass it on quick. The loser is the one left holding the tomato when it ceases to giggle.

In practice, this high-tech version of pass-the-parcel is so much fun in its own right that Elmo's giggling tomato has been played with lots and thrown around the house happily by our three year-old but playing the game with the cards is “too difficult”.

Toby is happy to focus on the cards and spot the colours or food items without the distraction of the tomato but prefers to “play catch again with Elmo's giggling tomato”.

I am sure that older children would be more likely to play Elmo's game as intended by the manufacturers. For now we are happy to have found a tomato that Toby likes!
