"What follows is the contents of a journal, found in the basement of a farmhouse somewhere in the Englsih countryside." So begins X a fantasy novella by Jack Croxall.
Readers never know who X is – she doesn't want to give her name – but she is on her own and in hiding from a terrible force outside of the cellar she has made her home.
As the novella progresses we learn that she is 15 and how her parents and sister died, how she has managed to stay alive... But she also knows that she too will succumb and so writes the journal as a document to be remembered by.
To say any more about X would spoil the dénoument. This is an excellent short read which should appeal to teens who like a spooky story.
Jack Croxall is an accomplished writer who knows how to engage young adult readers as well as older ones. We reviewed his first book Tethers and the sequel, Unwoven will be published in 2014.
