Blueair filterAccording to the World Health Association (WHO), air pollution is the single biggest environmental risk to human health causing seven million premature deaths each year and cardiovascular diseases such as stroke, heart disease and cancer and indoor air is up to five times more polluted than outdoor air.

Indoor air pollution is generated by everyday activities such as cooking, smoking, use of candles, open fires and cleaning products. In addition, polluted outdoor air enters homes and workplaces through ventilation and many common indoor materials generate particles and gases plus our pets also pollute our environment and many people are allergic to cats' dander or it exacerbates their existing conditions like asthma.

I have three cats and am aware that some friends are adversely affected by them when they visit.

Blueair recommends that you leave the air filter on all day and night  to keep your home pollutant-free but I found the noise level of the machine combined with the fact that it was blowing out cold air during a particularly cold winter meant that I turned it off after letting it run for a while. According to the manufacturers, their units take 12 minutes to clean the air. Obviously ventilation brings new pollutants indoors so leaving it running 24/7 would guarantee perfectly clean air. Running full time, a filter change is recommended after 180 days.

Based on a 680i running on fan speed 1 24/7 the energy consumption is 131.4 kWh/year which equates to £18.34 a year.

Blueair uses its own unique technology, HEPASilent™, enabling its air purifiers to capture 99.97 per cent of all airborne particles down to 0.1 micron in size and offer wifi-connectivity and remote app controlling.

At a glance, you can see the air quality in your room. Connect it to the Blueair Friend app to track changes in – and get tips to improve – your indoor air quality, learn how air quality varies depending on your various activities, control your air purifier from afar using any smart device, and access outdoor air quality data.

As I am not allergic to my cats I had no way of knowing how effective the air purifier was – until a friend came to dinner and within 15 minutes of the unit being turned on, had her allergy symptoms totally relieved.
