mother and babyTeething can be blamed for a wide range of reactions – grumpy, fussing babies who for one reason or another are generally out of sorts – and can cause mild localised symptoms that tend to start three to five days before each tooth erupts.

Some babies sail through the process, for others teething can be an uncomfortable time, causing distress to both parents and baby. Seeing your child in pain is an awful feeling so how should you best to treat their symptoms?

Recognising the signs of teething
  • Inflammation and tenderness of the gum
  • Pain and discomfort
  • Increased drooling, biting, gum-rubbing and sucking
  • Poor appetite, irritability, wakefulness and disturbed sleep
  • Ear rubbing
  • Facial rash
  • A slightly raised temperature (but not more than 38°C)
How to treat the symptoms of teething

Some infants find relief in biting on a cool object such as a chilled (not frozen) teething ring or having their gums gently massaged with a teething gel like bonjela.
Homeopathic chamomilla is recommended for teething and this is available in sachets: Nelson's Teetha.

We have also used effectively Kiwiherb's Children's Chamomile  and Nurofen for Children which is really good for reducing fever quickly. We particularly like the dispenser which makes giving the medicine to a baby (over three months) much easier. Nurofen for Children also comes in sachets which are great to have as a standby in your baby bag.
