When I became a mum, I became obsessed by the temperature of things. Is my baby too hot or too cold? Is he wearing too many layers? Is his bedroom chilly? Is he overheating? Is the bath too hot?
At a stroke, my ability to determine a comfortable, safe temperature, built up over a lifetime of experience, evaporated!
Enter the Tippitoes bath thermometer. A bath thermometer is now a staple item in the newborn's kit list, and this deluxe floating electronic version promises to make life easy and fun.
The operation is simplicity itself; just turn on the jellyfish-like green and purple blob, pop it in the bath (remembering to swirl the water around first to get an evenly distributed temperature) and check the readout on the screen.
The device recommends an optimum bath temperature of between 30 and 39 degrees centigrade, but we found the upper end to be a bit on the hot side. Should the water be dangerously hot, the single red LED will flash quickly. If it's too cold, the readout shows a dash ("-").
Is Tippitoes bath thermometer worth it? It's a small price for peace of mind, although to be honest, getting the bath temperature right does become second nature. By which time, however, it might begin a new lease of life - despite warnings on the packaging that "this is not a toy", the floating device doubled up very nicely as Captain Hook's island!
