Kingston MobileLite Wireless G2, a recent upgrade of Kingston’s Wireless Media Reader, is a versatile gadget that you will find particularly useful if your iPhone, iPad or Android device has limited memory.
Out of the box, it is: a battery charger and a WiFi access point and if you plug in a USB memory stick or a SD Card it becomes a media steamer and additional memory for your smartphone. Speaking of the box, the one thing not included is any instruction leaflet! However, discretely hidden on one side of the box is the Kingston website where you will find all the manuals and FAQs. Without these, the main information you require to ‘get you started’ is to download the free app Kingston MobileLite from the App Store. Run that app and it tells you to switch on the MobileLite and to change your Wi-Fi setting to connect to MLWG2. It then takes you through the short set-up routine.
It does do most of what it says on the box: “Extend storage capacity; unload content to USB Flash drives and cards / Stream media to multiple mobile devices at once and share social media / Charge your smartphone 2x from a full battery / includes Ethernet port to function as portable router”. However, I couldn’t get wireless bridging to work for me.
So, if you saved money by going for the iPhone with the least memory then at an Amazon price of about £33 the MobileLite will give you the extra memory you desire.
The MobileLite will be particularly useful if you are away from home and need to get photos and videos off the camera roll to free up memory. You will also be able to take with you those extra movies you couldn’t fit on. Also useful away from the mains, you can use the MobileLite recharge your smartphone at any time.
But do be aware that on the iPhone all the access is via the free MobileLite app. No other apps on your phone will be able to access anything on the MobileLite.
