The 3 Musketeers

This charming adaptation of the Three Musketeers tale, with the well known “all for one and one for all” motto at its core, is a couple of hours very well spent this summer holiday.

In 17th Century France, Prince Louis is waiting for his coronation; the villainous Cardinal Richelieu is scheming to seize power; the titular Musketeers are formally disbanded but hope to return order; and in a nice gender swap from the original, a young girl named D'Artagnan seeks to become the first female Musketeer.

The story unfolds with classic twists and turns, all set to a vibrant contemporary soundtrack of rewritten show tunes and pop hits, impressively played and sung live by the cast. Each of the performers plays multiple instruments throughout the show with extraordinary talent, popping up across the set with guitars, trumpet, accordion, violin, cello, drums and more.

It had just enough swashbuckling and plenty of silly jokes to satisfy our seven year old, with a couple no worse off for having to be quietly explained, and a few solid funnies only caught by the adults in the audience.

Definitely a 6+ show, as advertised, but I would suggest slightly older children would get most out of it, with audience members up to 12 clearly enjoying themselves.
