Rasheed Ongunlaru had a successful career in media before redundancy in 1998 changed the course of his life and he vowed never work full-time for anyone again.
He used the opportunity to pursue his love of music and singing before he studied Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and trained to become a life coach.
"I’m passionate about coaching people, to allow them to control their own lives and destiny. My particular approach is to work from the inside to outside, to find inner fulfillment.
"Success doesn’t lead to fulfillment, but fulfillment leads to success.

I" help people get
in tune with themselves. The
question they have to ask is:
‘What is it I really want to do?’ This can be very
liberating."
So what exactly is life coaching?
"I liken it to having a
personal fitness trainer - you need a personal
level of fitness to help you get to where you
want to go to in life. You are
the expert in your life and I have
the tools to help you
identify who you are,
where you want to go, and get the
best from life.
"This breaks down into
three parts:
Vision - who
you are and what you
are about, what
you want in life, what you are passionate about, where you want to go say in
five years time. I take a
holistic approach to career, personal life and relationships.
Belief – tapping into what is
stopping you, helping you to
identify what your
strengths are - most people
remember the criticisms they receive not the
compliments. You need
belief in yourself. Some
70 per cent of
messages we get every day are
negative and these
erode self-belief. You need to identify your
strengths and skills to turn this negative to
positive. It may be things in
your past are holding you back and you have to
let go of them.
Action - this is like going on a
journey. With a
clear, specific vision of what you want, you then work backwards to
define the steps you
need to take to change your job/run your own business or broaden your social life. You
identify the
support and resources you have and what you
need."
How can life coaching benefit parents?
"It helps with
life balance and
time management. It helps you to
articulate how you
feel and to work out the
practical things you may need to do. It gives you
clarity about what you are going to do. It’s a
combination of how you can be the
best parent you can with being able to identify what
you want for
your child and giving you
the space to discover this."
Life coaching and teenagers?
"Yes! One example was a
bright boy who was often
distracted by friends at the time when he should have been
studying hard for his
GCSEs. I had
four sessions with him and gave him the
space to articulate what he wanted without
feeling pressurised. He worked out
what grades he wanted and came up with clear
study programme for himself. He could see the
framework he needed.
"This is
applicable for anyone. For a
woman going back to
work after a
career break, for a
man who wants to work more
flexibly so he can spend
more time with his
family.
"With
life coaching you are tapping into part of yourself,
you coach yourself,
facilitated by someone who’s
experienced in this."
How long does it take?
"We start with a series of
four weekly sessions; the first is for
one and half hours, the rest are just under one hour. Then we book blocks of four, and have a session say
once a month."
Do you ever coach couples together?
"I’ve
never been asked to do it. I would if that seemed to be the best thing to do - I might do some
coaching together and some
individually. When I work with someone
that person is the most
important. That could happen with
a couple depending on what their
goal was."
Cost
Four sessions are
£300 and coaching can be on the
telephone or at the
studio.
