"
Cool,
brilliant – when can we make more?" This was the response from
Toby, aged
nearly seven, to completing
four recipes from
Cook with Kids by Rob Kirby. He was
ready to cook his way through the
whole book.
Toby
spent days
marking pages in this
fabulous cook book and created a
menu card for
his
granny's birthday. He chose and made
pink lemonade, snake pit jellies, love
heart cupcakes (with added candles these were turned into the
birthday cake)
and
chocolate Malteser fridge cake. This last recipe was a real
crowd pleaser for
our party for 12.
Cook with Kidsis designed to appeal to
children and parents alike with genuinely
tasty
recipes presented with an attractive, simple and
contemporary aesthetic.
There
are
five clear sections: Snack Attack, Scrummy Yummy Mains, Health Food Store,
Sweet Emporium, Baker's Shop and finally Smoothies and Cocktails. Toby enjoyed
reading the recipes with their enticingly delicious
photographs. The language
was
simple and really speaks to the
child cook; Toby could hardly believe his
eyes when the first line of "snake pit jelly" read
"Break up the jelly into
cubes - and eat some (only one square)!"
The
big
cheesy twists come highly recommended and the
Scrummy Yummy Mains are
deliciously comforting
family meals including New York sliders, easy
Thai
salmon fishcakes with Asian noodles and a gorgeous all-in-one chicken and
everything pie.
Robert
Kirby has written this book to benefit
Great Ormond Street Hospital School,
which will be receiving all royalties. He is heavily involved in
Chefs Adopt A
School, a scheme where
top chefs go into schools and encourage children to
enjoy cooking and eating
good quality food.
Cook with Kids
features
40 full colour recipes and would make a fabulous gift. The
recipes are
delicious and the proceeds will help raise
essential funds for a very good
cause. Personally speaking, Toby, Pippa and I had
great fun choosing and
making
the recipes together.
Toby's pride when the family
complimented his cooking
skills couldn't help but warm your heart.
