Tesco nappies - three panel members compared them to their usual brand

I was very interested to try the Tesco nappies as we have had varying success with other supermarket own brands.

The nappies looked similar to other supermarket ones. They were colourful and had cartoons on them that Lyla seemed to enjoy looking at.  They were active fit nappies so had a bit of stretch in the sides and fit Lyla really well. They didn’t gape anywhere and stayed snug even after lots of crawling and clambering! They didn’t leave any marks on her skin either.

The nappies were very absorbent. The best we’ve tried. Even after 12 hours at night they still felt dry against Lyla’s skin which wasn’t irritated in any way either.

If we had a Tesco nearby, we would definitely buy these nappies. They were excellent. I would highly recommend them.

As a very satisfied Pampers user, competitors are always going to have a hard time matching their performance. However for me there are two simple criteria that disposable nappies can be measured by - do they leak and do they give any kind of nappy rash?

I really laid down the gauntlet for these nappies by testing them at night and I'm afraid that two out of three nights, Tesco's nappies leaked. There was no sign of a sore bottom though.

So while my son might have found the animals printed on the fastening tapes an interesting departure from his usual nappies, a damp bed and soggy pyjamas didn't make these a very tempting alternative to our tried and tested Pampers. However the one factor that might make the leaks bearable is the price difference - Pampers Dry Carry Pack (24) costs £2.01 more - or maybe you just get what you pay for?

I have, for unknown reasons, always bought brand name nappies for my children and assumed that own brand nappies wouldn’t perform as well. I have to be honest and say that I saw absolutely no difference between these Tesco nappies and the more expensive brand I normally buy. They absorb well, are soft and dry against the skin and only leaked when faced with the most explosive output from a breastfed three month old!

The pull-ups were a little too big for my skinny older daughter and so were prone to falling down especially when wet. Anyone who can resolve this problem with pull-ups generally deserves a medal! But again I can’t fault their absorbency and comfort.

The only problem with these nappies is obviously their environmental impact and I’m currently unswerving in my allegiance to a brand with a higher biodegradable content and chlorine-free pulp, which is not perfect but makes one feel better about using disposables. This is a challenge the supermarkets need to embrace as they climb on the greenish bandwagon.
